More than 30 years after first showing up in the county as a sport, wrestling could soon be an option for the county's middle school students. During last week's Coweta County Board of Education meeting, Jim Morgan, who founded the Coweta Wrestling Club, asked the board to put a wrestling program into the middle schools. Morgan's club has wrestlers from age 5-14 and says the county is suffering in area meets because there is not a middle school program. All the surrounding counties have a middle school program. It's a very inexpensive sport, he said. The only costs to the system would be wrestling uniforms and mats at the middle schools and mats can up to 20 years, he added. Resident Brian Horton agreed with Morgan. It takes years to develop in the sport. This is one of the few sports that all sizes can compete, Horton said. East Coweta wrestling coach Scott Smith said his program is at a severe disadvantage because there is no program in the middle schools. Superintendent of Education Richard Brooks said he would meet with Morgan and report back to the board on the feasibility of starting the program.
