Peachtree City firefighters' boots made for fundraising

The Peachtree City Fire and Rescue Department is soliciting donations from local residents to help “Give Burns the Boot.”

The fund-raiser, which began Thursday and continues through Saturday, is designed to benefit the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation. The organization funds education programs about burn awareness and prevention; the funds will also be used to assist burn survivors in their recovery.

The fire and rescue department will receive a portion of the funds to use locally to purchase fire safety and burn prevention education tools.

The burn foundation will use the funds for the “Challenge for Life” education program, which is geared for middle and high school students.

It will also support Camp Oo-U-La, Georgia's only camp designed specifically for burn-injured children.

Other programs operated by the burn foundation will also be aided by the fund-raiser, such as the recent efforts to renovate two family suites at the Burn Center of Grady Memorial Hospital so families can stay there while a loved one is being treated.

The firefighters will be collecting donations at the following locations: the Kedron Kroger, the Braelinn Kroger and Harris Teeter grocery stores.

Volunteer firefighter David Sewall is chairing the campaign for the Peachtree City Fire and Rescue Department.

“Fire and burn injuries can strike anytime,” Sewell said. “Through its educational focus, the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation is working to prevent fire-related injuries from occurring.”

He added that the foundation works diligently to help make burn survivors' hospital stays as painless as possible.

Over 100 fire departments in Georgia are participating in the “Give Burns the Boot” fundraiser.
