Megasite talks prompt new job for public information officer

The battle over Coweta's mega-site is heating up.

Last week, the Coweta County Development Authority took the opportunity to remove 21st Century Coweta from the official contact list for state officials working on the project.

The project is believed to be a German auto manufacturer that would employ nearly 3,000 workers at a site near Exit 41 off Interstate 85 near Moreland.

This week, the commissioners took the step of strengthening public information officer Tom Corker's position.

Commission Chairman Vernon “Mutt” Hunter said he was tired of reading and hearing inaccuracies in the media and asked the board to allow Corker to send out news releases and contact local media when he found inaccuracies.

The move is apparently related to a local media source inferring the commission was behind getting 21st Century off the mega-site project.

“There's still a place for truth out there,” Hunter said.

The other commissioners agreed and enthusiastically supported Hunter's recommendation.

“I don't mind defending myself when I've been quoted correctly,” said Commissioner Robert Wood.

Hunter said Corker would not defend any commissioner, but rather make sure that the accurate information was received by the public.

In another mega-site move, Development Authority Chairman Mike Barber said his committee has been meeting on the project and should ready to release more information to the media soon.
