Bidders will have the chance to take home 100 gallons of gasoline, a night at Bonnie Castle, an original oil painting by artist Drew Galloway, tickets to the 2000/01 Season of the Newnan Community Theater, two hours of lawn care, kitchen design, a Cajun cook-out for twenty and much, much more at the Grantville Day Silent Auction on Saturday. The Silent Auction will be held in the historic Freight Depot in downtown Grantville from 4:30 - 6 p.m. and all proceeds will benefit the Grantville Auditorium Restoration. Newnan Hospital is sponsor of the fund-raising event which will auction a variety of unique and useful goods and services -- from a calf, donated by Al Pannell, to a free pool closing and consultation, donated by Boscoe Pools -- that have been donated by businesses and individuals. At a silent auction bidding sheets are posted by each item. Individuals write down the amount they are willing to pay for the item and the highest bidder at the end of the auction wins. Winning bidders often pay a fraction of the retail cost of the item. "We've had a great response from all those who have donated items," stated Hugh Farmer, organizer of the auction. "The auction will be a lot of fun and we hope to raise a lot of money for the Auditorium." Other individuals and business who have contributed services and merchandise for the auction include: Randy Beavers, Progressive Heating & Air, Contemporary Kitchens, Steve Fanning, Charles Farnham, Green Acres Lawn Care, Dennis Drewyer Landscaping, Tom Touchtone, Joe Crain Oil, Pete Willingham, Orchard Hills Golf Course, B Merrills, Junction Lanes Bowling, Parkers Limo, Super 8 Motel, the Grantville Diner, Gene Evans Ford, Marilyn Curtis, and the Grantville Package Store. Prior to the Silent Auction, there will be an old-fashioned variety show from 2- 4:30 p.m. in the Grantville Auditorium. Although the building is still under going restoration, the event will mark the first time in over 20 years that the Auditorium will be open to the public. The Grantville Performing Arts Board (GPAB) has put together a diverse line-up of talent for the show, including a violin and piano duet by Rev. Darris and Dottie Baker of Grantville Methodist Church; singer Tony Knowles; Brenda Marshall (of Moreland) and Choir; the Eagles Nest Drill Team; the White Oak Presbyterian Senior Bell Choir; an interactive performance by actress Caroline Carr; dance performance by the Turning Point Studio; scenes from upcoming Newnan Community Theater Company production of Driving Miss Daisy, and many other acts. Free trolley transportation between downtown Grantville and the Auditorium will be provided compliments of Rochelle Jabaley and family. There will be no admission charge for the show, but donations at the door will be appreciated. In addition to the afternoon's show, the day's events include a huge downtown rummage sale, beginning at 9 a.m., performing arts parade at 1p.m.,trolley Rides from 1-5 p.m., and a silent auction in the freight depot from 4:30 - 6 p.m.. In the morning there will be downtown performances by "Mother Goose" (Janice Sibley of Moreland) sponsored by the Grantville Library Board, and "stilt walker," Leah Cebulski of Newnan. Throughout the day there will be pony rides for the kids, arts and crafts, and a variety of delicious foods. The Grantville Senior Center will serve hamburgers and hot dogs and will host a Yard Sale at the Center to benefit their Food Bank. In the evening, there will be a Downtown Street Dance, featuring female vocalists/musicians, The Gentle Readers from Atlanta; and local band, Buddy Broach and the Good Time Boys. Proceeds from the rummage sale, silent auction and raffle will benefit the Grantville Auditorium restoration. The City of Grantville is located at Exit 35 off I-85, approximately 8 miles south of Newnan.
