Corley quits school board

The search is on for new school board member.

During Tuesday night's Coweta County Board of Education meeting, chairman Mike Sumner announced that long-time member Wade Corley had resigned.

Sumner said Corley delivered a one-sentence resignation letter to Sumner's law office stating that his resignation was effective at noon Tuesday.

The chairman did not speculate on Corley's reasons and said that was something Corley could talk about at a later time.

Instead, Sumner thanked Corley for his nearly 10 years of service on the board and more than 30 years in the Coweta County School System.

Corley started teaching in the 1960s and spent the last years of service as principal at Moreland Elementary.

The chairman said the school system would probably have a small reception at the July 11 board meeting to honor Corley.

In the last few months, Corley feuded with the board over its approval of a controversial redistricting plan for the system's elementary schools.

He objected to the socioeconomic element of the redistricting and voted against the proposal.

Sumner said the board's next action is to select a member to serve Corley's remaining two-and-a-half years on the board. The qualifications are that the candidate must live in the school system's fourth district.

The chairman would not speculate on when a decision would be reached.

Corley did not return phone calls prior to press time.
