On being a lover

By DR. KNOX HERNDON
Pastor

I'll bet I have your attention now!

Have you ever thought of what motivates you in most of the things you and I do? Love, or the lack of it, is certainly one of the strong motivators.

Have you ever wondered just why you wanted to win the lottery when it got to all time highs not long ago? If you really got serious with yourself, I'll venture to say that “love” had a lot to do with it and I'll explain why.

Mankind has some very basic needs, so says “Brother Maslow.” He so believed this that he came up with “Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.” One of these needs is to be “loved.” It is a trait that we all strive for whether we know it or not.

Mankind is forever wanting three things. This is not an exhaustive list but certainly among the top three. We want to all be loved and accepted, forgiven for the past, and we want to be somebody, or in other words “self esteem.”

When you think about it, these are really the reasons people wanted to win the large lottery. It was perceived that in doing so one would get instant fame and that the three issues mentioned above would automatically all fall into place; loved, forgiven and self esteem.

There is only one place where I can promise you this will happen, and that is deeply rooted in the basic gospel message. In receiving Christ you are loved, forgiven for the past, and have the highest esteem possible. That, my friends, is far more valuable than winning more money than you'll ever need!

If one is a believer and follower of Jesus, he or she will possess a new capacity and desire for love. This will be a new agenda, and there will be a capacity for love that didn't exist before. It is becoming a “new lover,” if you will.

I was always taught from God's word that the life you give away is the one you find and that if you lose your life for His sake you find yours.

By the time you read this, a wonderful “lover event” would have taken place in our Fayette Community. Many of the churches on the south side of Atlanta will have come together to participate in the world-wide event entitled the “March for Jesus.” There will have been hundreds and thousands of people who are real lovers, who set their alarms for an early rising on Saturday and who inspire their families to have the honor of celebrating Jesus unashamedly down the streets of Fayetteville, Ga.

I want to one day stand before my Lord and say that because of His love and sacrifice for me, I in turn became a lover of mankind. Remember that love is much stronger than hate and love will always win in the end! Always be a lover!

Our church will be moving in August from the American Legion Log Cabin in Fayettiville to our new land around Senoia, 13 miles south of Fayetteville on Ga. Highway 85.

The Rev. Dr. Knox Herndon is the pastor of His House Community Church (SBC) and a substitute school teacher in the Fayette County school system, and a former Army chaplain. The church is currently meeting in the American Legion Log Cabin across from the fountain on the Square in Fayetteville (but not for long). Prayer line 770-719-2365; e-mail Khern2365@aol.com.
