Area residents commended for Memorial Day participation

I thank all the area residents who turned out on Monday, May 29, for Peachtree City's 2nd Annual Memorial Day celebration. I estimate that between 400 and 500 people were there.

There were about 150 golf carts in the parade. That's triple the attendance of last year, which was our city's first Memorial Day celebration.

I think that the citizens of this area should be commended for their demonstration of patriotism. Our goal for this celebration is to make Memorial Day more than just another day off work. While everyone should relax and enjoy themselves, we should also remember the many sacrifices made by millions of men and women to give us the right to do so.

That is the simple essence of our Memorial Day celebration; to remember, and to honor those who have given their lives in the cause of freedom. Many people told me after the event that attending made them feel good. It was a cleansing, of sorts.

One young woman holding a small child was seen with tears flowing down her face during the playing of Taps. Apparently, someone she loved had made that ultimate sacrifice, and her tears helped ease the pain.

Our guest of honor, General Raymond G. Davis, and his wife, Knox, were impressed with the turnout, and with the warm reception they received during their stay here. He and Knox commented afterwards that, for them, it was one of the most moving events and warmest receptions they'd ever received.

Coming from people who are asked to preside over many such events, those are high praises. So for those who attended, thank you and be proud, because you were part of something special. For those who couldn't make it this year, I hope you'll join us next year.
