The Friends of the Fayette County Public Library decided in April to obtain a digital piano for the children's room and a baby grand piano for the Dorothea H. Redwine meeting room.

In less than a month the organization reached its goal and conducted a concert to show off its new acquisition.

Among those showcasing their talents and the tenor of the new piano were Rick Massengale, who holds a master's of performance degree; Bill Nelms, who accompanied Massengale on an acoustic bass; Deborah Brown, whose musical talents have taken her all over the world as well as recording 10 albums; Barbara S. Zellner, local pianist and voice instructor; Poppy Greer, playing a tuba, and Shirley Poole and Mary McGowan, who played a duet. The last two ladies have 120 years of piano between them.

Also on the bill of fare were Dr. Kerrick A. R. Butler Sr., who heads the Butler Conservatory of Music in Fayetteville, along with two of his students, Crystal Calloway and Ray Lundy.

Friends of the Library President Donna Ford said, “We are really dedicated to making our public library the very best it can be. The fact that we accomplished such a big goal in less than a month was thrilling, to say the least.”

The two instruments cost more than $7,000 and the funds were raised through selling mugs, note cards and donations.

Membership in Friends is $10 for an individual. For information phone The Fayette County Public Library at 770-461-8841.
