It seems no one's life is untouched by cancer. If you haven't experienced the disease, chances are you know someone who has. Often the very mention of the word conjures up images of thinning hair, frail bodies and lost lives. Yet a growing number of people in the United States more than eight million are considered cancer survivors and relish the term. Celebrating life and giving cancer survivors access to important resources related to survivorship are the goals of a celebration at the Atlanta Cancer Center in conjunction with National Cancer Survivors Day. Sponsored by Atlanta Medical Center, the outdoor event is set for Sunday, June 4, 2-4 p.m. and will feature music, entertainment, food, prizes and inspirational stories from guest speakers. Events such as this are important to help cancer survivors cope with the many physiological and psychological issues related to cancer and its treatment and to understand that they are not alone, said Dr. Allen Lawhead, a gynecologist/oncologist and medical director of the Atlanta Cancer Center. The event is free to all cancer survivors, their families and friends, and anyone affected by cancer. People interested in learning more about the event may call 404-265-6212. Since its founding in 1901, Atlanta Medical Center has been serving the medical needs of the community and the region. The 467-bed facility offers cardiology, medical/surgical, neonatal, obstetrics/gynecology, oncology, orthopaedic, rehabilitation and emergency services. The Level II trauma center is supported by aeromedical services providing transportation to critical patients throughout the state, including Fayette County.
