With students graduating thsi week, Coweta County schools will soon resemble a ghost town.

But students who have failed classes this year or are looking for extra credit will soon start crowding the halls again.

Summer school starts June 12 at Smokey Road Middle School. The first semester ends June 22 and the second semester runs June 23-July 7.

Students can register at their home high schools prior to June 2, and open registration will be at Smokey Road June 6 from 8-11:30 a.m. and June 7 from 8-11:30 a.m.

State rules require 130 hours of attendance in summer school for students to receive one Carnegie unit, and 65 hours for half a unit.

Cost for this year's program is $150 per half unit. Out of county students pay an additional $50 per half unit and driver education is $175.

System officials made it clear that daily attendance is required and absences are frowned upon.

“Unexcused absences will not be tolerated and will result in dismissal from summer school. Absences due to vacation, camping trips, church outings, athletic camps, extracurricular school activities and the like are not excused absences,” read the system's guidelines.

Students must provide their own transportation to classes and will not be allowed to remain on campus more than 20 minutes after their last classes.

The school system also emphasized that the dress code remains the same for the summer term as the rest of the year. Items that are not allowed to be worn include sunglasses, strapless dresses, tight clothes and hats.
