A Riverdale man was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center Monday afternoon after a motorcycle accident on Ga. Highway 92.

According to the Fayette County Sheriff's Department, William V. Hammock, 46, was going northbound on Hwy. 92 at approximately 2 p.m. when he approached a line of cars behind a garbage truck stopped in that lane near Peters Road. His attempt to stop apparently led to the accident.

An investigation at the scene, along with testimony from witnesses, suggests that Hammock applied his brakes and may have attempted to lay the bike down on its left side to avoid hitting a car, when the tires gripped the road and caused the bike to flip back to the right. Both Hammock and his bike flipped several times before coming to rest in the southbound lane.

Hammock was flown to Atlanta Medical Center by Phoenix Aircare, and his condition was not known at press time.
