New technology makes work out time productive

The list of reasons for Fayette countians not to work out just got shorter.

With the advent of Netpulse at the two Fayette County Gold's Gym locations, health and fitness consumers will be able to surf the web, check e-mails, check stocks, shop on-line, listen to CD's and watch television, all while sweating off those extra pounds.

If “working out” on the Internet isn't enough of an incentive, users also earn frequent flyer miles and win points toward prizes, gift certificates and workout gear every time they work out.

The additional cost of this innovative workout companion for gym members? None. And it's fast. The high-speed Internet connection — DSL network — is faster than most users have at home.

Additionally, exercisers can also monitor and keep track of their workouts. Using the touch-screen monitor, users set up a personal account. The system keeps a work out log that can be accessed using a unique password.

The Fayette County Gold's Gym is the only fitness center south of I-20 to have Netpulse, but industry experts say they'll eventually be everywhere. Currently the Fayette County gym just outside of Peachtree City on Ga. Highway 54 has Netpulse installed on four stair machines and expects to add more. Installation of Netpulse Stations at Gold's Gym Peachtree City is “in-the-works,” said owner J.D. Holmes.

“Our members are excited about being able to use Netpulse while working out,” said Selina Gaspard, director of the Fayette County club. “We were all watching the installation closely to see who could be first to use it.”

Lori Petty, club manager, added, “It's going to be great to check my e-mail while I'm working out.”

Named one of Business Week's Best Products of 1999, Netpulse is led by Thomas Prouix, known as the author of the best-selling Quicken software, and cofounder of Intuit.
