Child safety to get a boost Sat.

Parents of young children can get more information on keeping those children safe at the Fayette County Safe Kids Coalition's annual Children's Safety Fair Saturday.

Unintentional injuries, such as those sustained from auto collisions, falls, bicycle and pedestrian activities, shocks, fire, poisoning and drowning, are the leading cause of death and injury to children.

Members of the Safe Kids Coalition and representatives of Wal-Mart will be in the parking lot of Wal-Mart in the Fayette Pavilion Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. conducting numerous child safety events.

Several nationally certified child passenger safety technicians will check child safety seats for proper usage, installation and to see if any seats checked are under recall.

Other members will be on hand conducting a bicycle rodeo and rally for bike safety.

The Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services Fire Safety Smokehouse will be on hand and additional law enforcement and fire and rescue equipment will be on display.

Other organizations will have informational booths dealing with a range of child safety topics.

Parents are invited to bring car seats, bikes and helmets. There is no cost.

The Safe Kids Coalition is a nonprofit volunteer organization committed to reducing injuries to children in Fayette. Formed in 1992 and led by the Fayette County Health Department, this team of child safety specialists consists of members of local fire and rescue departments, law enforcement, health and human service groups, civic groups and others.
