Collins honored by
developmental organization U.S. Rep.
Mac Collins, whose 3rd District includes Fayette
County, was presented with a Congressional
Partnership Award from the National Association
of Development Organizations recently for his
leadership in promoting regional economic
development programs.
The award was
presented by NADO member Lanier Boatwright of the
McIntosh Trail Regional Development Center in
connection with the association's 2000 policy
conference in Washington, DC.
According to NADO
President Terry Sherwood, Rep. Mac Collins
has been a strong advocate for grassroots-based
programs, such as the Economic Development
Administration, that are helping small town and
rural America achieve the same economic
prosperity and stability that the rest of the
nation currently enjoys.
In October 1998,
Congress passed the first reauthorization bill
for the Economic Development Administration since
1982. The multi-year reauthorization bill targets
the agency's assistance to the most distressed
communities, streamlines the application process
and implements management reforms.
Because of
the efforts of lawmakers like Rep. Mac Collins,
local communities that are currently faced with
economic hardships have a chance to compete in
today's ever-changing economy, said
Sherwood.
NADO Congressional
Partnership Awards are presented during the
second session of each Congress to members of
Congress who, in the opinion of the organization,
have demonstrated outstanding leadership in
promoting regional economic development policies.
Founded in 1967,
the National Association of Development
Organizations provides training, information and
representation for regional development
organizations serving small metropolitan and
rural America. NADO members provide professional
and technical assistance to over 1,800 counties
and 15,000 small cities and towns.
