Two from Starr's
Mill named Merit Scholars Two Starr's
Mill High School students have been selected as
Merit Scholarship winners.
Roger
L. Barker and Josh A. Weddle both received the
Georgia-Pacific Corporation Merit Scholarship.
Barker
plans a future in computer engineering. He is a
two-year member of the National Honor Society, a
junior marshal, and an accomplished musician who
has played in the school's marching band and
symphonic band for four years, jazz band for
three years and pep and pit bands for two years.
Barker played in all-region band.
He
competed on the academic team for four years and
math team for three years.
Weddle
plans a career in international business. He was
named class valedictorian, received Governor's
Honor and the Governor's Scholarship. He has
studied the Japanese language for five years and
is a two-year member of the National Honor
Society, newspaper staff cartoonist, two-year
bank employee, local restaurant employee and a
math team and key club member.
Barker
and Weddle are two of 1,200 distinguished high
school seniors receiving corporate-sponsored
Merit Scholarship awards. Financed by companies,
corporations, foundations and other business
organizations.
Award
recipients are the candidates judged to have the
strongest combination of academic skills and
achievements, extracurricular accomplishments and
potential for success in rigorous college
studies.
The
Georgia-Pacific Foundation is supported by
contributions received from the Georgia-Pacific
Corporation in Atlanta. The foundation supports
merit scholarships for sons and daughters of
employees of Georgia Pacific Corporation and its
subsidiary companies.
