Two Coweta County commissioners will not know their electoral fate until the November election. That's just one of the verdicts that will be rendered by voters this year. Qualifying ended last week and it looks like it will be a busy election season. In the commissioners' races, Chairman Vernon Mutt Hunter will have to wait until November to find out his fate. Hunter was the sole Republican to qualify and will face off against Democrat Marvin McKoy in the Nov. 7 General Election. The race for commission Post 4 will be decide in the General Primary July 18, when Republican incumbent Charlie Jones battles former commissioner Jim Morgan and Leigh Schlumper in the Republican primary. In commission District 5, Democrat Robert Wood will face Republican Tom Touchstone in the November race. In other races to be decided: Six candidates will compete for school board District 2: Everton Archer, Daniel Evans, Ike Hudson, Richard Mann, Allan C. Payton and Brian Roy. School board races are nonpartisan and will be decided in the July primary. The seat was formerly held by Harry Mullins, who is not seeking reelection. School board District 5 member Rick Melville did not receive any opposition in his race. In school board District 6, Marihope Shirey Troutman and William Bill Word will vie for the seat vacated by Beth Wagstaff, who is not seeking reelection. One of the more interesting races should be for the clerk of Superior Court, where incumbent Joan Griffies faces opposition from Mary Jane Thompson, who worked in the clerk's office for years. The race is nonpartisan. The only other contested races are for General Assembly seats. In Georgia Senate District 28, incumbent Rick Price faces opposition from Dan Lakly, Charlie Harper and Mitch Seabaugh in the Republican primary. In House District 106, incumbent John Yates faces off against Thomas McBroom in the Republican primary. The winner faces Democrat Lee Howell in the November race.
