The Piedmont Physicians Specialty Clinic in Fayetteville will offer pneumococcal pneumonia shots and tetanus shots to those 18 and older Friday, May 12 from 2-4 p.m. Pneumococcal pneumonia is a bacterial infection that kills more people in the U.S. than all other vaccine-preventable diseases combined. Seniors are particularly at risk from the complications that go along with the virus. Tetanus, a disease caused by bacteria found in soil and around animals, can be fatal. Many warm weather activities increase exposure to tetanus. It is easily prevented with the proper vaccination. Adults should receive a tetanus booster shot every ten years, according to the physicians' group, while the pneumonia shot generally provides immunity for at least five years. The cost of the pneumonia shot is $15 or no co-pay for Medicare part B, and the cost of the tetanus shot is $10. To schedule an appointment or for information, phone 770-719-5600.
