Phi Mu plans 18,000-sq. ft HQ here

The Phi Mu sorority will be moving its national headquarters to Peachtree City sometime in the near future.

Rezoning for a five-acre site in Westpark has been approved by the City Council, giving Phi Mu the go-ahead to build an 18,000-sq. ft. facility that will include six guest rooms for sorority representatives who come in periodically for meetings.

Several conditions were put forth by the Planning Commission last month with regard to the guest rooms. Also, a clause was included that would reverse the zoning should Phi Mu ever vacate the premises.

City development director Jim Williams called the sorority's application “a good fit,” and a perfect fit for the site. He added that it was “refreshing” to see an organization put a single building on five acres, considering the ever-increasing tendency to have parking lots and buildings almost back up to each other on commercial lots throughout the city.

No one spoke in opposition to the request. Councilman Annie McMenamin noted that the request would have practically no negative impact on the city, and she moved to approve it. The rezoning was unanimously approved.

In other business, the council voted to approve Chun-Sen Chen's application for a beer and wine license for Formosa Deli, as well as a request by Richard Bearden for a transfer of the alcohol license for the Mini Mart on Ga. Highway 54 West. Both votes were unanimous.
