City officials ready to help with deck problems

The Peachtree City Building Department hosted an information display booth at Gil-Roy's Hardware and Lumber last week, in conjunction with International Building Safety Week. The theme was “Code Enforcement in Your Community: We're Making a Difference.”

Building and Code Enforcement personnel were on hand to educate and answer questions regarding building safety. Displays included such safety items as smoke, radon and carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers, safety goggles, and the proper safety latches for swimming pool fence gates.

Also on display was the department's custom model illustrating the proper method of attaching decks to homes. The department recommends that residents inspect their decks, porches, and balconies to ensure the structure is bolted properly to the home at the attachment band, reminding residents that older homes can be particularly susceptible to deterioration that might cause a structure to be unsafe.

Residents who are unsure of proper deck attachment can call the Building Department at 770-487-8901 with questions, or stop by the offices on McIntosh Trail to see the model deck display. Residents may also schedule a special courtesy inspection if they remain concerned about the structural safety of their deck or porch.
