Governments look to cooperate more

Senoia Councilman Kyle Frank hopes that what he witnessed last week continues.

Frank attended a meeting of all the municipalities and local governments in Coweta County. The meeting was suggested by city of Newnan officials, who want local governments to work closer on their planning strategies.

“Hopefully, this will promote cooperation between the cities and county and the Board of Education,” he said.

With Coweta County's rapid growth in the last decade, many of the county's leaders want to try and work closer to make sure that all the leaders know what's going on in neighboring jurisdictions.

Mayor Joan Trammell said she had received a briefing from the meeting that calls for all of the governments' staffs to compile their land use plans and comprehensive growth plans to compare with the other towns and county.

As for the Board of Education, Frank said they board is basically in a reactive position.

“They have to build schools where the people move,” he said.

Frank added that he was impressed with the presentation the Chattahoochee-Flint Regional Development Center made at the meeting and urged city administrator Leonard Thompson and town planner Bill Johnston to work closer with the regional planning agency.

Trammell agreed with Frank and said the planning agency is currently working on a grant to obtain funding for a regional transportation study.

“That's something I'd really like to see happen,” she said.

The meeting originally drew the ire of the county commissioners, who blamed Coweta's sprawl on Newnan's recent spate of annexations and development along Bullsboro Drive in Newnan.

But Frank said all the parties were civil and instructed their staffs to get back together for future meetings.
