Coweta wants to be on state's contact list

The Coweta County Commission is taking its need for information to the state.

For the last two weeks, the county has been embroiled in a debate with 21st Century Coweta officials about learning the name of industrial prospects who visit the county.

21st Century is a public/private partnership that serves as a recruitment agency for possible industrial relocations to the county.

County officials got into the industrial recruitment business late last year after acquiring the Shenandoah Industrial Park and are anxious to get more tenants into the park.

The agency maintains that if it tells county officials about each prospect that it also must tell other developers.

Bur earlier this week, the county drafted a letter to Commissioner Randy Cardoza at the Department of Industry and Trade about the controversy.

In the letter, commission Chairman Vernon “Mutt” Hunter asks Cardoza to consider Shenandoah operations manager Buddy Harrison as the county's official contact person.

“Coweta County understands Georgia Department of Industry and Trade has additional designated contacts in Coweta County, but our desire is to add Mr. Harrison to your list,” Hunter wrote.

The letter explained the county's recent industrial park acquisition and said county officials were being “pro-active in terms of development for the citizens of our county.”

Hunter said that Harrison would be contacting state officials soon to schedule a meeting with project managers and said the Shenandoah development is an asset to Coweta County and the state of Georgia.
