Peachtree City
library closed for workshop The
Peachtree City Library will delay opening
Thursday, April 13, until 5 p.m. in order to host
a workshop led by personnel from the Georgia
Office of Public Library Services.
The
workshop, entitled Using GALILEO for
Reference Services, is attracting
librarians from around the state, especially
since the University System of Georgia has made
at-home access to GALILEO available to library
patrons. Approximately 20 librarians will be in
attendance at the workshop, which will be in the
Library's new Educational Learning Laboratory.
GALILEO,
Georgia Library Learning Online, is an on-line
resource that provides access to numerous
databases such as AIDS and Cancer Research,
Medline, national newspapers, and Acxiom business
and residential directories.
We
are very excited about hosting this important
workshop at our library,
technology/training manager Jill Kuhns said.
Over the past year we've made staff
training a top priority at the library in order
to provide first-rate assistance to our
patrons.
Kuhns
is referring to the training the entire Peachtree
City Library staff underwent last spring to bring
them up to speed on the changes that took place
during the upgrade of their Local Area Network.
The upgrade included the introduction of the
library's high-speed fiber optic Internet
connection on 11 public work stations.
GALILEO training is the icing on the
cake, said Kuhns.
Patrons
can now log onto this powerful research tool from
home through the GALILEO web site at www.galileo.peachnet.edu and typing in the password
provided by their local public library. Passwords
cannot be given out over the telephone, so
registered library users must visit their local
libraries in order to obtain one.
