Fayetteville eyes
lower speed limits By DAVE HAMRICK

You'll
have to slow down a little more on three
Fayetteville streets if City Council approves
proposed speed limit changes Monday.
Council
will discuss the changes tonight in its regular
work session. Both meetings are at 7 p.m. at City
Hall.
Prompted
by the state Department of Transportation,
council will consider changing the speed limit:
From 55 to 45 on
Ga. Highway 85 from the south city limits to a
point 300 feet south of Beauregard Boulevard;
From 55 to 45 on
Jimmy Mayfield Boulevard from Ga. Highway 92 to
South Jeff Davis Road;
From 40 to 35 on
Lee Street from Ga. Highway 85 to Jimmy Mayfield
Boulevard.
Council
also will consider sending a list of 15 local
streets to the DOT for inclusion in the state's
repaving program.
The
list will be in order of priority, and the state
is not guaranteeing that all the roads will be
repaved.
According
to a letter from DOT Commissioner Wayne
Shackelford, need for the state repaving funds
have outstripped he department's revenue for
calendar year 2000.
Council
also will consider a contract with Carter Watkins
Associates Architects for
stabilization of the
Holliday-Dorsey-Fife House.
The
architects would prepare construction documents
and design the project, which would include
architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical
and plumbing work to restore the original eight
rooms of the historic house and add accessible
rest rooms. The firm also would oversee the
construction work.
Other
items on Monday's agenda:
Jimmy and Dell
Walker's request for a change in zoning from
R-30, a subdivision category, to O&I (office
and institutional) for a house at 555 Grady
avenue, across from Bradford Square office
complex. The city's planning staff recommended
denial of the request, saying it constituted spot
zoning, but the Planning Commission is
recommending approval.
Minor changes in
the city's erosion control ordinance recommended
by the state Environmental Protection Division.
Amendments to the
city sign ordinance (see related story).
” A rezoning request from
Argonne Properties for 110 acres at Ga. Highway
54 and Tiger Trail (see related story).
Presentation of a
proclamation honoring Fayette Middle School
students who took part in a recent gift of trees
to the nation of France to replace trees that
were lost in a hurricane
