Lyme disease season is here

As our weather improves and we can feel spring around the corner, we will be spending more time outside.

This also brings us closer to potential insect-borne illnesses, such as Lyme disease.

Named for Lyme, Conn., where it was first discovered, Lyme disease is a bacterial infection spread by the bite of a certain kind of tick. According to the Fayette County Health Department, early signs include a rash (frequently in the shape of a bull's eye) with flu-like symptoms of fever, headache, chills or body aches. later symptoms include joint and neurological complications.

Lyme disease is found in almost all areas of the United States, especially in the upper Midwest and the Northeast. Pacific coastal regions and the Southeast also have a significant incidence of the disease.

To find out if you might be at risk for this illness, take this simple quiz.

I live in or plan to travel where Lyme disease is found.

I have a dog that I sometimes exercise outdoors.

I live in an area populated by deer.

I work outdoors.

I do outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, camping, golfing, hunting or gardening.

I have had Lyme disease in the past.

If you can answer “yes” to any of these statements, you could be at risk for Lyme disease. One of the easiest ways to help protect yourself is with LYMErix vaccine. This is an effective vaccine series for persons between 15 and 70. A series of three injections is given over a 12-month period.

For information about LYMErix vaccine or to make an appointment to begin the series, phone the Fayette County Health Department at 770-461-1178 ext. 5416, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m to 5 p.m.
