Timeless Southern gospel songs like “He Will Pilot Me,” “Uncloudy Day,” “I Want to Be Ready,” and “Rock of Ages,” will be performed by a host of groups and soloists at Christian City in Union City Tuesday evening starting at 7 p.m.

Purpose of the gathering is to record the third in a series of Southern gospel classics performed by “good independent artists” who cannot afford to produce a recording on their own, according to Ron Weathers of Mountain Glory Gospel of Arden, N.C.

“We're dedicated to the preservation of traditional Southern gospel music,” Weathers said from his mountain studios outside Asheville. The songs to be performed date from the 1800s and early 1900s.

He estimated that the entire run-through would take about three hours, allowing warm-up time for the groups and soloists. The live session is free and open to the public.

The project will be produced and directed by Art Bain, using Computer Direct recording technology to capture highest quality sound.

“Live at Christian City” is planned for release to radio stations June 1, and will be available on CD and cassette in Christian book stores and retail outlets nationwide.

Some of the Georgia groups scheduled to appear include the Cedar Valley Boys, Rome; Heart to Heart, Winston; Heart and Soul, Jackson; Redemption, Villa Rica, and the New Jerusalem Singers from Blythe.

The is Weathers' third project. “It started here in Asheville last summer,” Weathers said. “The next one we did was in Greensboro in December,” he said, referring to the live recording sessions.

Future projects include the Land of the Sky Singing in Asheville, N.C. May 16, and the Old Time Convention at the National Quartet Convention in Louisville, Ky. Sept. 22. Groups and artists interested in participating in these events can contact Weathers at (828)687-2854.
