Parkway gets new name – again

The newest parkway in Peachtree City finally has a name that will stick.

The Peachtree City Planning Commission voted 5-0 Monday night to give the Line Creek collector road now under construction the name MacDuff Parkway, acting on a recommendation from former mayor Fred Brown.

After considerable discussion two weeks prior to this meeting, the Planning Commission voted 3-2 to name the road Inverness Parkway. That name was denied by Fayette County 911 officials because a similar name already exists. The unofficial name for the past few years, Line Creek Parkway, was rejected for the same reason.

City staff came to this week's meeting prepared with a list of more than two dozen possible names, most of them in keeping with the Scottish theme that runs throughout the city in places such as Braelinn and Kedron.

Brown presented a brief history lesson and pointed out that MacDuff was a name of historical value to the area, like Kedron, in that it had been used before Peachtree City was ever officially established.

He said that he would like for the city to reconsider Inverness, but the Planning Commission was more than happy to follow his next suggestion, MacDuff, and get the matter settled.

Brown also suggested the names Inverearary and Dungeness.

In other business, the Planning Commission approved a rezoning for a proposed office development in Westpark that could become the national headquarters for the Phi Mu fraternity.

Plans call for a building of about 18,000-20,000 square feet on five acres. The biggest point of discussion for the Planning Commission was a request for six guest rooms in the building.

A new LUC (limited use commercial) zoning district was presented for consideration to address this issue, with conditions for guest quarters to be permitted as an accessory use:

No more than six separate guest rooms on the property.

No more than one guest room for every 3,000 square feet of office space in a building.

All guest rooms must be located entirely within the office building.

No guest rooms shall include a complete kitchen.

All guest rooms shall be used only for short-term accommodations for bona fide business associates of the principal office use.

The guest rooms shall be strictly for nonpaying guests, with no payment of any kind made for use of the facilities.

The zoning goes with the applicant, and shall revert to the original zoning if the applicant sells the property.

No one spoke in opposition to the request, and it was approved 5-0.
