Gas leak, odors send patrons outside

Two unusual events kept Fayetteville firefighters busy last Sunday.

Diners at the Waffle House at Ga. Highway 54 and Ginger Cake Road were evacuated briefly due to a gas leak, according to Fire Chief Alan Jones. It was a minor occurrence, apparently a leak of carbon dioxide from a cylinder that helps dispence carbonated drinks.

Customers were not kept outside very long, Jones said, before the situation was controlled.

Sunday evening, the TinselTown movie theater at the Fayette Pavilion was closed early due to an identified odor in the building, Jones said. Emergency personnel answered a call shortly after 7 p.m. and were on the scene about 45 minutes.

They found what they believed to be the source of the odor, an HVAC-type unit on the roof, and shut it off, but the theater management was advised to close the building until it could be checked out Monday morning, and they did so.
