DUIs add up to two years in jail

Four DUIs in a four-month span have put a Peachtree City woman behind bars for two years.

Colleen Grace Brewer was sentenced Friday in Fayette County State Court to a total of 24 months in jail and six years on probation, with more than $12,000 in fines. She will also have an ignition interlock on her car for eight years.

Brewer was stopped four times in 1999 — July 31, Sept. 1, Oct. 8 and Nov. 21 — for driving under the influence and other assorted traffic offenses.

Also in State Court last week, Scott Johnson was found guilty of DUI in a bench trial less than one week after a jury in Brunswick convicted him of the same offense.

Evidence in the first case was used here, according to solicitor Steven Harris, and a Glynn County officer was brought here to testify.

In an unrelated case, Johnny Layhew pled guilty to simple battery for beating his girlfriend, Harris said, receiving a 12-month jail sentence just after serving 90 days in Clayton County for the same crime.

Layhew, who pled March 7, will receive a mental health evaluation as part of his sentence, Harris said.

In Fayette County Superior Court last week, Kimberly Ann Phillips pled guilty to two counts of forgery in the first degree and two counts of theft by receiving stolen property.

Judge Paschal English sentenced her to four years to serve on each forgery count, along with 12 months to serve on each theft charge. All four sentences run concurrently.

According to court records, she forged two checks totalling $276 at Belk in October, using a First Union account under the name of Barbara M. Williams. The theft charges stemmed from the fact that she had Williams' wallet, Georgia driver's license and blank checks in her name.

In an unrelated case, Derrick Davis pled guilty Friday to a felony count of theft by shoplifting and a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of an officer. Judge Ben Miller sentenced him to three years to serve on the theft charge and a concurrent 12-month sentence for obstruction.

Davis took 19 cartons of cigarettes from Kroger in December, and gave officers several false names and dates of birth during their investigation, reports stated.
