, Design work is underway on Church Street in downtown Fayetteville. City Council has approved a $26,255 contract with Integrated Science and Engineering to draw plans to widen the street, add curbs and gutters and build a siderwalk down one side. Residents say the narrowness of the street and its dilapidated condition make it unsafe and invite crime. City leaders want to make Church Street an active part of Main Street Fayetteville, the citys downtown revitalization program. , Planned community district, a proposed new zoning category designed for large, mixed-use developments in Fayetteville, may become a reality next Monday. City Council will discuss the proposed ordinance Wednesday, with plans to act on it March 20. Public comment will be accepted at both meetings, which will be at 7 p.m. at City Hall. Waiting in the wings is The Village, the first proposed project seeking the new zoning category. The city Planning Commission will discuss the project Tuesday and again March 28 before voting on whether to recommend the PCD zoning for the 110-acre, 203-home plan, which also includes neighborhood shopping, offices, parks and a hotel. City Council approved the basic concept for The Village last May. A master plan for the project was drawn up by Cooper Carry company, hired by the city rather than the developer due to the sensitive nature of the property. The property involved is one of only two large, undeveloped tracts remaining in Fayetteville, and because of its proximity to downtown, it will have a profound effect on future development in the area, city leaders say.
