Bush, Gore sweep county

Coweta County's residents mirrored voters across the country Tuesday and gave resounding victories to Vice President Al Gore and Texas Gov. George W. Bush in the Democratic and Republican primaries.

With all 29 precincts reporting, Gore received 2,074 votes, while Bill Bradley got 366 votes.

On the Republican side, Coweta's voters got to choose from six candidates. Sen. Orrin Hatch received 4 votes, while Gary Bauer received 18 votes and Steve Forbes got 20. In third place was Alan Keyes with 801 votes, while Sen. John McCain received 2,356. Gov. Bush won the county by a wide margin with 6,708 votes.

The Coweta County Probate Court office said the county's turnout was 25 percent, which was far less than the secretary of state's projection of 38 percent.

It appears the race for the presidency will boil down to Bush versus Gore, with Bradley and McCain putting an end to their campaigns this week.
