Donald Apking seeks school board post 

Donald J. “Don” Apking announced he would seek election for Post 2 on the Board of Education at the Fayette County Republican Breakfast Saturday.

The post is currently held by Woody Shelnutt.

Apking has served as chairman for the Facilities Equity Committee of the school board, was a member of the board's Citizens Round Table group and served as the 1999 and 2000 cochairman of the Fayette Citizens for Continued Excellence in Education.

The Fayette Citizens for Continued Excellence in Education was in the forefront of supporting recent efforts for a special purpose local option sales tax for school construction projects.

Citing his continued interest in the education process and other community involvement, he said it is “easy to criticize, more difficult to get involved.”

Apking moved to Fayette County in 1991. He first lived in Peachtree City, moving to the county in 1995. He served on the Peachtree City Recreation Commission from 1993 to 1995, serving as chairman in 1994. From 1995 to 1999 he served on the Fayette County Recreation Commission and from 1996 thru 1999 he was on the Fayette County High School Booster Club Board of Directors. He was elected president in 1998 of the FCHS Booster Club board for an ongoing term that ends in April.

Apking is married to wife, Julie, and has a son, Brad, who is currently attending Auburn University. He is the vice president, sales and marketing, for Tiberian Technologies Inc. in East Point. He was graduated from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1972 with a BSBA in marketing and management.
