Fayette science teachers honored by their peers

Rhoda Rush, a science teacher at McIntosh High School, has been selected Science Teacher of the Year at the high school level in District 5 and will compete for the state title.

Rush graduated from Fayette County High School and completed her undergraduate work at Berry College. She earned a master's degree in secondary science education from the University of Georgia. Rush has taught physical science and chemistry at McIntosh for 13 years.

Science teacher of the year awards are conferred by the Georgia Power Co. and the Georgia Science Teachers Association. The winners are selected based on teaching excellence and their commitment to improvement.

Sharon Collins, a fourth grade teacher at Tyrone Elementary School, has been named Georgia Science Teacher of Promise. The award is sponsored by GSTA and Atlanta Gas Light Co. and recognized science teachers with one to three years of teaching experience who show exceptional promise.

Statewide winners are selected at the elementary, middle and high school levels.
