Science fair winners preparing for region

Winners in the Fayette County Science and Engineering Fair will present their projects Thursday, Feb. 24 in Griffin at the Regional Education Service Agencies headquarters for regional judging.

Representing Fayette County are the following:

Junior Division

Rising Starr Middle School — Amanda Young, Mary Ann Burrell and Mallory Summers. Project: Preserving Potential.

Flat Rock Middle School — Jennifer Merrill, Erin Burnett and Ashley Denton. Project: Spotting Air Particle Pollution.

Senior Division

Fayette County High School — Jessica King. Project: Does the Organism that Causes Tuberculosis have a DNA Plasmid?

McIntosh High School — Megan Bernard, Meghan Kirkland and Sunya Sweeney. Project: Produce Power.

Starr's Mill High School — Brett Haynie and Phillip Strickland. Project: Insecticides — Helpful or Harmful.

Individual winners:

Life science, Junior Division: First place — Michelle Ellenburg, Booth Middle School. Project: Is it Time Yet? Second place — Chris Kragor, Rising Starr Middle School. Project: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (mouthwash).

Physical science, Junior Division: First place — Danny Owens, Rising Starr Middle school. Project: MagNEATo. Second place — Michael Koziol. Project: The Strength-to-Mass Ratio of Bridge Beam Pairs.

Life science, Senior Division: First place — Sammy Chang, Starr's Mill High School. Project: RAPD PCR for Differentiation of Xyllela Fastidiosa Strains. Second place — Lynne Belshause, Fayette County High School. Project: Monitoring Hydroponics and their Nutrient Deficiencies.

Physical science, Senior Division: First place — Tony Hung, McIntosh High School. Project: The Comparison Effect of Limiting Factors on Electrolyzed Oxidizing Water vs Chlorine Water in Relation to their Bactericidal Efficiency. Second place — Michael Spradlin, Fayette County High School. Project: Effectiveness of Antimicrobial Preservatives.

Team Junior Division: First place — Danny O'Shaugnessy, Dustin Hipp and Haynes Finney of Rising Starr Middle School. Project: Stretching Time. Second place — Kelly Loren, Diane Smith and Amanda Major, Rising Starr Middle School. Project: Medication Mania.

Senior Team Division: First place — Ingrid Lawhorn, Anna Fishman and Kathleen Powers, McIntosh High School. Project: The Acid Rain test: Which Building Materials Will Pass? Second place — Jennifer Burk and Amanda Baumgarner, Starr's Mill High School. Project: Water Quality in Fayette County.

Special award winners:

Chad Cross, Starr's Mill High School, an award from the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association. Project: Disposable Computers.

Adriene Hester and Lindsey Barnett, Whitewater Middle School, an award from Fayette Clean and Beautiful. Project: Whitewater pH.

Angela Murray, Megan Young and Holly Kennedy, Whitewater Middle School, an award from Fayette Clean and Beautiful. Project: Pollutants Down the Flint.

Audrey Thain and Alison Prock, Whitewater Middle School, an award from Fayette Clean and Beautiful. Project: H2O Quality.

Staci Nash, Starr's Mill High School, an award from Fayette Clean and Beautiful. Project: The Creek That Reeks.
