School board eyes softer chairs for future teachers

Fayette County teachers may be sitting pretty if a proposal to purchase new upholstered, adjustable chairs to replace the current molded plastic teacher chairs is approved by the Board of Education.

Fred Phillips, purchasing agent for the school district, displayed two chairs to the board for their appraisal Monday night, in response to their earlier concerns over the high price of furniture needed for the addition at Flat Rock Middle School.

The regulation teacher's chair, found in the newer schools such as Peeples, cost $46 apiece, while the office-type upholstered model, originally purchased for elementary school computer labs cost $175 each. Phillips suggested the board consider a trade-off, replacing the computer chairs, which are showing signs of wear and tear from student use, with the molded task chair and awarding teachers the more comfortable upholstered model.

Phillips also had a teacher's desk on the floor which cost $306 and was available from the Georgia Correctional Institute. A similar model desk which was purchased to equip Flat Rock and Peeples cost $579.

In other business, the board approved awarding the contract for natural gas to GMA/Southeastern and discussed a proposal to stay with the 911 Call Center for its two-way radio communication system.
