Quorum questions addressed

Some questions about meeting guidelines and what constitutes a quorum for the City Council of Peachtree City were answered at last week's regular council meeting.

There had been some confusion about whether three members of the five-member council meeting somewhere besides an official called meeting would be an illegal gathering. City attorney Rick Lindsey acknowledged that the matter was a “gray area,” and he reiterated his previous recommendation that no more than two council members meet together at any time outside a regular meeting.

Section 4 of the city charter defines a quorum for Peachtree City as “the mayor and three councilmen, or four councilmen without the mayor.”

The council approved an amendment to the charter that would require any meeting at which the majority of the council is present to be open in accordance with the Georgia Open Records Law.

A majority of the council is needed to take any official action, regardless of how many members are present at a meeting.
