Commission restricts sex businesses

The Coweta County Board of Commissioners Tuesday made clear its intentions about any sexually oriented businesses coming into the county.

After unanimously passing a more than 30-page document full of regulations, the board thanked the county's attorney Mitch Powell, for working so hard on the project.

While the ordinance is meant to regulate any potential businesses, the commissioners believe the regulations will prevent any from applying for a license.

After studying the document for more than a month, the commissioners added more requirements Tuesday, including:

An employee of the business, such as an exotic dancer, could not get closer than 10 feet to a customer.

Any managers of the business must live in the county.

Previously, the board had agreed to several other regulations, including:

The businesses cannot be within 1,000 feet of any recreational facility or an establishment that sells alcohol.

The business cannot be within 1,500 feet of any school, religious institution, public park, day care center or residence.

The business cannot be within 1,000 feet of another sexually related business.

The business can be located only in an industrial area.

No alcohol can be sold at the business.

Workers at the business are not allowed to accept tips.

All workers must complete background checks.

Even though commission Chairman Vernon “Mutt” Hunter was not able to attend the public hearing on the ordinance, he voted for it.

“I want to send a message that the board is unanimous in its recommendation,” he said.
