Sunday Briefs

Fayetteville's dining options increase by one Monday as Applebee's opens on Ga. Highway 85 next to the new Eckerd on Banks Road.

General manager Jeff Jones says the 175-seat restaurant offers an eclectic blend of foods for all tastes.

Ga. Highway 54 will become Paul Heard Memorial Highway under legislation being prepared by state Rep. Kathy Cox, R-Fayette. Heard, a former minority leader in the House and respected Fayette leader, died last November.

Cox said she hopes to introduce the legislation this week.

Plans to widen and improve Church Street, just off the Fayetteville Courthouse Square, as part of the city's Main Street revitalization and historical preservation efforts hit a minor snag this past week.

City Council was prepared to choose a company to design the project, but the state Department of Transportation had not yet provided paperwork necessary to allow work to proceed. Council tabled the matter until the paperwork is in place.

The project is designed to make the neighborhood street a more active part of the Square, improve drainage and traffic in the area and bring street lighting in to cut down on crime.

Here's a reminder from the Fayette County Board of Elections. If you are not currently registered to vote in Fayette County, Feb. 7 is the last day to register and be eligible to vote in the March 7 Presidential Preference Primary.

There is no length of residency requirement. You need only be a resident of the county to register.
