Senoia's historic bridge to close

Senoia's Bridge Street will now lose its historic wooden bridge to vehicular traffic.

Tuesday night, the city agreed to allow only non-motorized transportation on the bridge.

The city recently received a letter from Norfolk Southern that deeded the bridge to the city with one caveat.

If the rairoad ever opens the line again, the railroad will take back possession and build a higher wooden bridge.

In November, Mayor Joan Trammell told the City Council and the residents that the bridge is getting too old and rickety for cars.

Trammell, who lives on Bridge Street, says the bridge is being used now as a “jumping-off” place for a lot of cars and the wooden bridge cannot continue to take that kind of abuse.

To get the bridge up to vehicular standards would cost thousands of dollars and probably result in a concrete bridge, instead of the creaky wooden structure that has seen several generations of Senoia residents drive over it.

Trammell expects the bridge to be closed within a month and said the city will not have to spend any money on repairs, since cars will no longer be using it.
