Less than a year after opening with a great deal of fanfare, Siemens Electromechanical Components corporate headquarters in Peachtree City will be closed.

Officials at Tyco Electronics confirmed the Siemens corporate facility would be closed by June.

Tyco purchased the Siemens EC division in November and decided to shut down the Peachtree City operation because of a duplication of services.

The move puts approximately 200 people out of work, although Tyco spokesperson Mary Ann Kane said the employees can transfer to a facility in North Carolina or the company's headquarters in Harrisburg, Pa. if they like.

The Peachtree City facility conducted its grand opening only last July, and the newly built headquarters will be vacant by the end of June, Kane said.

Tyco vice president Greg Johnson said the decision to shut down the facility came after an intensive strategic analysis was completed.

“The jobs impacted are duplicative of positions already staffed at Tyco Electronics.

The decision in no way reflects upon the caliber of the affected former Siemens EC employees or the contributions they have made, he said.

Johnson added that employees who choose not to relocate will be offered a “generous severance package.”

Kane said the workers were notified of the closing Dec. 16 and Tyco has not decided what to do with the physical building.

“We should reach that decision by the time we close,” she said.

In addition to closing the Peachtree City facility, Tyco is also closing plant facilities in Casas Grandes, Mexico.

Tyco Electronics had sales approaching $8 billion last year, according to its web page, and manufactures a variety of products, including fiber optic lines.
