How they rang in the new year

By Janet McGregor

Fayette Countians rang in the new year in a variety of ways.

One group went to dinner, then got on a boat and watched the new year arrive on Crystal Lake. Some large and elaborate parties were held throughout the county. Many spent a quiet evening at home with family and friends.

Here are a few of the things our Prime Timers and elected leaders did to bring in the new millennium.

*Glenn Winslette
Holiday Inn Express, Fayetteville

“I stayed at the hotel to make sure everything rolled over and operated without disturbing our guests.”

*Charlie Nelson
The Guide

“We got together with a small group of friends and had a few laughs.”

*Carol & Gene Fritz
Peachtree City Council

“We spent Christmas in California visiting our grandchildren and enjoyed that very much. We came home for a fairly low-key planned New Year's, but we did stop by a couple of parties we had been invited to for a short while to wish everyone well for the new year.”

Bill McNally
County Attorney

“We went to a party at my daughters. My grandchildren were there — we had a wonderful time.”

*Susan & Jack Antel

“We had dinner with our summer concert group of friends at the fabulous Village Cafe in Fayetteville. At the midnight hour we were at the home of Gordie and Sondra Tushek, where we welcomed in the 21st Century.”

*Hollis & Joyce Harris
Peachtree City

“We had a very quiet evening at home with our daughter and grandchildren. And we were not worried about Y2K at all.”

Mickey Littlefield
Fayette County School Board

“I stayed at home with my family. We watched the new year come in on the television.”

Harold Bost
Fayette County commission chairman

“On New Years Eve, Evelyn and I attended a black-tie fund raiser party in Port St. Joe, Flordia sponsored by the Womens League. We met many of the local business and political leaders.”
