Some Fayette millenium wishes

By Janet McGregor
Contributing Writer

Local Prime Timers and leaders were asked to share a “millennium wish” with our readers. While the wishes varied based on the individual's perspective, there was a consistent message of hope for a positive future for the county and the world.

*Greg Dunn
County Commission Vice Chair

“As we enter the new millennium my hope is that the collective leadership of Fayette County (elected, business, civic and religious) can truly work more closely to ensure the best quality of life for all our citizens. We hear statements just like this every day when it appears to be the `politically expedient' or `politically correct' thing to say. I am confident that in our community these statements need not be hollow promises or political pandering. We have leaders with the dedication, talent, work ethic and integrity to convert these declarations into positive realities. We need not follow several of our neighboring counties into declining quality of life simply because we were unable to harness the talents and ideas of legitimately competing interest groups. We all deserve better! As Judge Mills Lane says repeatedly, `Let's get it on!'”

*Glenn Winslette
Holiday Inn Express, Fayetteville

“My millennium wish is that we faithfully control our growth without destroying our history and charm.”

*J. D. Holmes
Gold's Gyms, Fayette County

“During the past 100 years, we have seen unbelievable advances in communication and transportation. From telegraph to telephones to cell phones to the Internet; from horses to cars to airplanes to spaceships; this century has witnessed the greatest explosion of technological advances in the history of the world. And yet, in spite of fast food, fast cars, and fast computers, we are more frenetic and are working longer than our foreparents, who at least had to stop working when it got dark. The challenge for this nation in the new millennium will be for us to refocus our priorities away from the acquisition of material wealth and toward a new awareness of our families, our friends, and our God. Then, we will gain inner peace as well as prosperity. Happy Y2K!”

*Carol Fritz
Peachtree City Council

“My wish would be to see everyone focus, and work together to maintain the integrity and way of life here in Fayette County that brought us all here in the first place. We have to accept the fact that we are going to grow. Peachtree City is almost built out, with some of the most difficult and painful growth occurring at this time. This is a new experience for most of us. I for one have never lived in a city that was not yet built out — always in one that was being rebuilt! So our perspective depends on our experiences and attitudes. We can be part of the solution, or we can be part of the problem. Solutions to the many complicated issues that face us will require compromise. Therefore, the future for the citizens of Peachtree City and the rest of this wonderful county, depends on all of us listening to each other, understanding, and accepting the fact there are many different perspectives on issues facing us in the future, and working together to face and solve those issues.”

Publisher, The Guide, covering Coweta & Fayette

“My wish for Fayette County in 2000 is that cool heads prevail as we learn to deal with the enviable growth in our population, and that the infrastructure of our county keeps pace with the growth.”

*Jim & Ellen Steinbach

“We have much to be thankful for as we enter the Third Millennium. It is our wish that the discoveries in knowledge and technology be used as a means for improving the quality of life for all humanity. It will be a significant challenge as we have found that new technologies over the last decade have tended to capture some and left others feeling isolated. For example in the US we have increased the amount of time on the job and decreased the time spent with family and friends. Too little seems to have been done to reduce poverty, malnutrition, and disease in the United States and the world.”

*Andy Carden
Director, Fayette Senior Services

“May the year 2000 bring all the health, successes and blessings that Christ Our Lord has for each of you.”

*Dr. Paul Hagan
Drug Free Works

“I am thankful for all of the support from the citizens of the counties on the Southside and wish everyone a prosperous and healthy New Year.”

*Hollis Harris
EO & President, World Airways

“I hope we continue to move forward and excel as the number one county in the state, and the country, in education.”

*Mickey Littlefield
Fayette County School Board

“My millennium wish for the county is that our quality of life be maintained and continue the way it has been.”

Harold Bost
Fayette County commission chairman

“My Millennium wish is that Fayette County continues on the new path of open and honest government that was set by the current Board of Commissioners in January of 1999. Further I hope that the citizens of Fayette County will take a more active part in county government.”
