Finding Your Folks

Reader questions research on Coweta Arnolds

By JUDY FOWLER KILGORE

Cecil Shipley of Peachtree City (retireed@earthlink.net) recently sent me an e-mail and questioned some of the Arnold research we had published on the Arnolds of Coweta County. Cecil said he thought we had a bad link in the listing of Owen Glenn Arnold as the son of Owen Arnold and Louvisa Pollard. Cecil’s wife is related to the family of the husband of my dear friend, Frances Hanson Arnold (ArnoldF1916@aol.com), who lives in Fayetteville. Frances’ husband is descended from these Arnolds.

Cecil also wrote to Ken Arnold (KArnold2@bellsouth.net), who has been our “Arnold family expert” since he has done such extensive research on this family.

This is how great genealogy comes about, folks. Researchers compare notes, information and sources, and usually arrive at a true conclusion, correcting bad links which can send you into nightmare-genealogy-never-never-land. Here is Cecil’s letter, sent to both Frances and myself:

“Last week a friend asked me to read her letter to the editor and gave me the address for the online Citizen. While searching for the letter I noticed the genealogy column written by Judy Kilgore. That is where I located your name.

“I browsed all the articles for the past three years. The column dated 17 Jan. 2003 included a discussion of the Arnold family and included the name and e-mail for Frances Arnold.

“I noticed discussions of Arnold, Banks, Owen, Owens, Bailey, and Echols in the genealogy columns. All of these are included in my computer file, but initially I would like to discuss Arnold. I have two Arnold lines.

“John Arnold was born 1750 in Perquimans, North Carolina Colony, Great Britain, and died September 1827 in Abbeville District, South Carolina, USA. He married Mary Pettis 1770. She was born in 1751 and died in 1815 in USA. This line concerns descendants of his son William Pettis Arnold and his wife Elizabeth Eddins. This Arnold line intermarried with the Owens family. My wife is not related to this line.

“William Arnold was born about 1700, and died 28 November 1774 in Cumberland County, Virginia Colony, Great Britain. He married Elizabeth Bostock about 1725. She was born about 1710, and died after 1774. This line concerns descendants of his grandson, Allen Jennings Arnold, and his wife Jane Owen. Obviously, this Arnold line intermarried with the Owen family. My wife’s mother is a descendant of Captain Henry Anthony North, a grandson of Robert North and Leah Echols, and Julia Arnold, a granddaughter of Allen Jennings Arnold and his wife Jane Owen. Her stepfather is a descendant of Frances Jane Arnold, a daughter of Allen Jennings Arnold and his wife Jane Owen, and William Buchanan North, a son of Robert North and Leah Echols.

“My first remark is a comment regarding the given names of the wife of Henry Anthony North. I have her name as Julia Claire Arnold. The 1860 census has Julia S., the 1870 census has Juliana, the 1880 census has Julia, and the tombstone does not have her name. I have not located a will or a marriage record. I did not record my source for Julia Claire, but I would be interested in knowing your source for Juliana. A quick guess is that her name was Juliana and she was commonly called Julia.

“My next remarks concern William Glenn Arnold. In the genealogy column, William Glenn Arnold, born 1829, was listed as a son of Owen Arnold and Louvisa Pollard. I believe this is an error.

“In my computer file, William Glenn Arnold, born 1829, is listed as a son of Susan Marie Glenn and Park Eddins Arnold, a descendant of John Arnold, born 1750. The Coweta Cemetery book has both Park Eddins Arnold and William Glenn Arnold buried in the same cemetery. Glenn is the surname of his mother, Susan Marie Glenn. The 1850 census lists Samuel F., age 18, in the household of William Glenn and Caroline Arnold. Samuel is a brother of William Glenn and a son of Park Eddins. The will of Susan M. Arnold lists William Glenn Arnold and his grandchildren. The census records lists the same grandchildren for William Glenn Arnold as this will.

“William Glenn Arnold, born 1829, had one son, born 1856, and one grandson, born 1880, and one great-grandson, born 1922, all named William Glenn Arnold. I also have a William Glenn Arnold married Frances Louise Gibson in 1920. I can not identify this person. I also have a William Glenn Arnold born 1862 and married Emma S. Unknown. I can not identify this person.

“I look forward to discussing these Arnold families with the hope that all these William Glenn Arnold persons can be identified. If I have made an error or overlooked something obvious, please let me know of it.

“If you provide a mailing address I will mail a copy of the Bible records for some of this family.

“I enjoyed reading the genealogy columns and look forward to reading many more.

“Sincerely, Cecil Shipley.”

Cecil followed up by sending a copy of the e-mail he sent to Ken, which included an extensive family file on the Arnold family done from his research. I keep separate files on all the family information I receive through the column and I appreciate Cecil’s sending the information.

Since I am not related to the Arnolds, I can’t offer a comment, so I will leave it to our readers to unravel this research. If you have any information on the Coweta Arnolds, I would appreciate your response.

I welcome your letters about genealogy and info on your Atlanta metro families. Send them to The Citizen, Drawer 1719, Fayetteville, GA 30214; e-mail jkilgore@thecitizennews.com or jodiek444@aol.com.

Until next week, happy hunting!

(Judy regrets that time does not permit her to do personal research for others.)
