Finding Your Folks

The south side Almon family

I received an e-mail last week from Timothy Allman who read my recent stories about the Blakes, Echols, Babbs and Woods on The Citizen's Web site.

"So ... where are the Almons?" he asked. I guess he felt I had only done part of the story.

He was right. I stumbled all over the Almon family in Heard County when I was researching the Woods, Blakes, Daniels and Echols families. And one of my Blake/Wood relatives, Delaney Jane Wood, married Zachariah P. Almon as his second wife, following the death of Antoinette Babb. Zachariah P. Almon was the son of Jonathan Holston Almon and Delaney Taylor.

But, talk about having the same names! There were so many Hezekiahs and Zachariahs, not to mention a couple of Delaneys, that I gave up before I even got started.

So, Timothy sent me a modified register report on his Hezekiah Almon (also seen as Allman and Alman) who moved from Edgefield District, South Carolina and settled in Heard County, Ga.

I had seen Timothy's family tree on Rootsweb several times when I was browsing, so I sneaked a peek at the Almons who came before Hezekiah and discovered that Timothy had his Almons back to Isle of Wight County, Va., beginning with William Almon who died there in 1771. Could it be that the Blake and Almon families knew each other 100 years before their great-great-great-great grandchildren would meet and marry? Could it be that this family relationship went back to Colonial times? Stranger things have happened.

But let's get on with the Hezekiah Almon who came to our area. This family also appears in Lynda Eller's book, "A History of Heard County, Georgia, and Its People."

Hezekiah was born sometime before 1771 in South Carolina. By 1795, (probably sometime in early 1794) he had married Mary Holston, the daughter of William Holston Sr. and Mary Fredrick, and they started their family which would eventually total 10 children. Those children were:

Jonathan Holston Almon b. 20 Jan. 1875; Hezekiah Almon b. 10 March 1797; Solomon Almon b. abt 1798; William Almon b. abt. 1802; Mary Ann Almon b. 30 March 1804; Elinder Almon b. abt. 1805; Lewallen Almon b. 30 May 1808; Rebecca Almon b. abt. 1812; Moses Luby Almon b. 3 Oct. 1813; and Aaron Almon b. 10 Nov. 1817.

In the 1820s, Hezekiah, Mary and most of their children moved to Heard County, GA., and settled between Frolona and Waresville, and here they lived the rest of their lives. Some of their children moved into nearby Carroll, Coweta and Meriwether counties, but Hezekiah and Mary remained in Heard county until their deaths.

Jonathan Holston Almon, son of Hezekiah and Mary, married Delaney Taylor, daughter of Josiah Taylor and Susannah Glanton, and they had Susan Rosalia, Elizabeth, Zachariah P., (this one belongs to me) Hezekiah Taylor, Mary Elizabeth, Josiah, William John, Enunah F., Clarissa C., Moses Nathaniel, Wyatt U. (died in Cleburne County, Ala.), and Nancy Ann. Jonathan died sometime before 1860 in Heard County. Delaney died 29 Aug. 1877 and is buried in the Almon Cemetery in Heard County.

Hezekiah Almon, son of Hezekiah and Mary, married Elizabeth Taylor, Delaney's sister, and they had Nancy Ann, Elizabeth Ann, Moses Taylor, Solomon Luther, Susannah D., Mary Elenda, Alice, Martha Henrietta, Parrie Lee, Hezekiah Gilford, James L., Narcissa, Bulah, Burdett, Josiah and Augusta. (Susannah D., above, belongs to me also ... she married Micajah Alsabrook and their daughter, Emily America Alsabrook, married one of my Wrens.) Hezekiah died 16 March 1865 and Elizabeth died 2 May 1883. They are both buried in the Almon Cemetery.

William Almon, son of Hezekiah and Mary, married Martha Sutton and they had Mary, Nancy C., Elizabeth, Martin B., Samantha E., Madison Lumpkin, Martha and Deanna. Some of William's children moved to Alabama.

Mary Ann Almon, daughter of Hezekiah and Mary, married Charles Medlock Sutton, son of Phineas Sutton and Nancy Medlock, and they had Aaron, Samantha, Martha A., Sarah, Charles P., Benjamin J., Andrew Jackson, Nancy, Ellen, Moses and Amanda G. Mary Ann and Charles both died in Monroe County.

Elinder Almon, daughter of Hezekiah and Mary, married Derrick Holsomback, son of Derrick Holsomback and Mary Moseley, and had Wiley, Robert, Emory and Lovett.

Lewallen Almon, son of Hezekiah and Mary, married Sinthy Frances Stephens, daughter of Joseph Stephens and Celia Lambert, and they had Celia Frances, Susan P., William John, and Mason. Some of their children moved to Meriwether County.

Rebecca Almon, daughter of Hezekiah and Mary, married Thomas Claxton, son of Henry Claxton and Fanny Jordan, and they had Zachariah Philip, Mary, William L., Lewis and Martha.

Moses Luby Almon, son of Hezekiah and Mary, married Mary Ann Rowe, daughter of James Rowe and Narcissa Sabrina Lewis, and they had James Hezekiah, John Benton, Augusta Ann, William Rowe, Oliver Lewis, Allen, Barnet, Hiram Walker and Franklin Moses. From the birth places of their children, it appears that Moses and Mary Ann lived in Meriwether County.

Aaron Almon, son of Hezekiah and Mary, married Ann Thurman and they had William R., James P., Solomon Lewallyn, Moses thurman, Lucy Jane, Marcella, Laura and Charley. Some of Aaron and Ann's children died in Mississippi.

Timothy has a lot more on this family and says he has been researching them since 1999. You may e-mail him at Allmantr@cs.com. Thanks, Timothy, for sharing your research.

I'm still looking for stories about your Atlanta area ancestors. Send them to The Citizen, Drawer 1719, Fayetteville, GA 30214; E-mail jkilgore@thecitizennews.com or jodiek444@aol.com.

Until next week, happy hunting!

(Judy regrets that time does not permit her to do personal research for others. She will willingly share research information on her own family lines, including collateral and allied lines.)
