Finding Your Folks

Allen, Jones, Phillips, Morris, Mann ... and a hodgepodge of other families

It always gives me a good feeling when I hear from people in faraway places who have read about our column online.

This means I am beginning to accomplish my goals: connecting Internet researchers with non-Internet researchers and putting families together.

This past week I heard from two researchers who picked up on the column from a message left on Genforum. Thank you, Clarence Leathers, whoever you are, for leaving that message and connecting us with two more people who have Atlanta metro ancestors.

Anne Westbrook wrote from Alexandria, Va., about her Allen, Phillips and Jones families and Ruby Evelyn (Pat) Ogletree e-mailed me from Maiden, N.C., concerning her Carroll, Starr, Ogletree, Morris, Mitchell, Mann, Gray, Bransford, Harris, Hightower and Ogletree families. Pat is a former Fayette resident who attended Brooks Elementary School.

Since my space is somewhat limited here, I will give as much as I can of Anne's ancestry first and save details on her families and Pat's families for next week.

Anne's earliest Allen ancestor was Jeremiah Allen who was in Walton County, Ga., in 1820 and 1830. By 1840, he had moved to Coweta, and by 1850 he was in Campbell County where he stayed at least through 1860. Anne found the inventory and appraisement of his estate in Book H, Campbell Co., which covers estates from 1863-1869.

Jeremiah Allen married Susanna Unknown and had the following children: Matild a (1811-1868) m. Lemuel Pruett Banks, b. 1806; William Matison (1815-1891) m. Permelia E.; Mahaley m. Unknown Bean; Mary m. Unknown Cooley; Jeremiah C., moved to Texas; Parmelia m. Unknown Carrington; Almeda m. Unknown Miles; Susan m. Unknown Moon; and Henry A., b. 1830, d. 19 Jan 1865, m. Sarah Phillips (1833-1863) on 7 Dec. 1851 in Meriwether Co. Anne is seeking information on Sarah's parents as they are unknown.

She says she surmises that Sarah's father was one of the Phillips men in Meriwether County in 1850, likely one of the sons of James Phillips, whose will was probated in Newton County, in 1834. James was the brother of the Rev. Trustin Phillips.

Henry Allen, son of Jeremiah and Susanna Allen, and his wife, Sarah Phillips Allen, were in Coweta County in the 1860 census. Henry served in the Confederate Army and died 19 Jan. 1865 in federal prison camp at Ft. Delaware. According to his service record, Susanna died while he was away.

Henry and Sarah Phillips Allen had the following children: Lucinda, b. abt. 1853; Martha Ellen (Mattie), b. abt. 1855, m. the Rev. George Adamson, b. 22 Nov. 1850; Jeremiah Solomon, b. 1858, prob. in Coweta, d. 5 March 1883 in Campbell Co., m. Louisa Louella Jones (daughter of Harrison and Rebecca Jane Phillips Jones) on 18 Nov. 1880 in Fayette Co., b. 13 Feb 1861, d. 9 Aug. 1891 in Fayette; Susan, b. 1859; Mary W., b. 1862; and an infant who died in 1863.

Jeremiah Solomon and Louisa Jones Allen had one child, Henry Arthur, b. 23 Dec. 1882 in Campbell Co., d. 24 Jan. 1946 in Fulton Co. Henry married Maude Ann Snead in Fayette Co. Maude was b. 15 June 1887, d. July 1981 in Fulton Co. These are Anne's grandparents. Three of their five children are still living.

Louisa Louella Jones Allen's ancestry begins with her great-grandfather, Robert A. Jones, who was in Georgia as early as 1788, when his son was born. Robert's birth and death dates are unknown, but he died after he executed a deed in November 1830.

Robert Jones drew land in Fayette in the 1821 Land Lottery and was said to have been a resident of Clarke County at that time. Anne says he was not in the 1820 Clarke census, however, and she is unsure whether he ever actually moved to Fayette. When the Fayette land was conveyed to Robert's son, Jesse, in 1830, the deed was executed in Clarke.

The only child (known to Anne) of Robert Jones is Jesse Jones, b. abt 1788 in Ga., d. after the 1860 Fayette census. Jesse married Rebecca Miller 1 Oct. 1820 in Clarke Co. Rebecca died before the 1860 census. Anne adds that Jesse Jones and Jabez Jones were both shown as the head of the same household in the 1820 census of Clarke County.

Jesse and Rebecca Miller Jones had the following children: Jesse Jr., b. abt. 1819; Burton and Paschal, two sons for which there is no documentation, only word of mouth; Martha, who married three times; Harrison, b. 1828 in Clarke, d. 1906 in Fayette, m. Rebecca Jane Phillips (1834-1911); and Robert, b. 1830 in Fayette, d. 1913 in Fayette, m. Elizabeth R. "Nannie" Phillips.

Harrison and Rebecca Phillips Jones had the following children: Zelethia or Talitahi, exact spelling not known, apparently died young; Louisa Louella, shown above as wife of Jeremiah Solomon Allen; Emma Allis, b. 1866, d. 1889, m. Unknown Kent; and Wilson Lee, b. 5 Jan. 1869, d. 12 Dec. 1936, m. Lena Mae Unknown.

Anne included much more on her Phillips ancestry and is curious about how her two Phillips lines may connect. She thinks the link may be Trustin Phillips as he and John Phillips were the only two Phillips families in the 1840 Fayette census. Trustin's ancestry is well documented and I will give you more about that next week.

If you think you may connect to Anne's families, write to her at 5305 Jesmond St., Alexandria, VA 22315, or e-mail her at a.w.westbrook@worldnet.att.net.

Just to touch on Pat Ogletree's families (and to whet your appetite for next week), I will tell you that Pat is seeking information on the Fayette County Manns, as she has information on that family from Germany to Ireland to Fayette, but not much on the Fayette County Manns themselves.

Pat also would like information on the father of Francis Marion Morris, husband of Amanda Mann, who is buried at Antioch Baptist Church across from the Morris farm. She also wants to know if this Morris family is connected to the family of Margaret Mitchell.

Pat's address is: 4361 Laney Rd., Maiden, NC 28650. E-mail her at pat_laney@hotmail.com.

If you're looking for your Georgia ancestors or have a local family history to share, write to The Citizen, Drawer 1719, Fayetteville, GA 30214; e-mail jkilgore@thecitizennews.com or jodiek444@aol.com. I'll be happy to share it with others and maybe help you "find your folks."

Until next week, happy hunting!
